Badgers 1, Farmers 0

Today I was looking at the BBC news website (always a good place to get a rant topic), and noticed they looking at culling badgers. For anyone who doesn’t know what culling is, it’s allowing people to kill an animal species to decrease their numbers faster than nature ever could. For instance, grey squirrels are being caught and sold at restaurants in the woodland area’s because they numbers have increased so much. That is culling. It’s legal and a way to stop certain problems caused by the culled animal. It was proposed to cull badgers because they believe the cattle stem of TB comes from diseased badgers. In other words, the farmer’s cattle die because of the blind furballs.

Luckily the idea was rejected. But on the news story the spokesman of the farmers said “Ooo arr, we ain’t too happy by this. ‘Ar industry going t’ pan you see caus’ cattle die!” Between the hay chewing and accent they’re a bit pissed. Now I understand it’s their business that’s failing because of the badgers, but it’s yet again another example of where humans have decided they are above nature. That their farming, that’s been around for a mere 10,000 years (or 1500 as British farming), is suddenly more important that nature, which has been around for … well a REALLY long time.

As it’s been around for a LOT longer than this agriculture malarkey, nature seems to know what it’s doing. If it decides that badgers kill cattle, it what has to happen. I’m not some sort of nature freak. I don’t run over animals in the road, I think it’s cruel and since they were here first, why should we be heartless bastards if we can safely avoid it. But when you make it so your lifestyle takes precedence over the very land you gain a living from, there’s some sort of karma going to take place.

I know a lot of people will start to complain and tell me, “If it wasn’t for the farmer’s you would be eating squirrels”. Well if I did, it wouldn’t be too bad. Our ancestors did it. They lived! If all these farmers are complaining constantly, I’ll take away their half-a-million pound tractors, give them pitchforks and show them how easy they have it. I can’t see too many farmers going into the business with the idea that they’ll be driving Ferraris around! It’s a hard life. That’s how it is. We can go back to the middle ages if they want. No? Didn’t think so.

So stop whining about it and just deal that some badly painted, diseased ridden animal is more loved by you and has gotten the better over you. It’s nature’s revenge for carving it up time and time again when grass looks so much better; for cutting down hedges and destroying many small animal’s homes; for chopping down woods and creating farmland over … BADGER’S HOMES!

See. Karma.
